THE CONSUMERS UNION OF TAJIKISTAN is a public, non-governmental, non-profit organization, established in July 2002.

The purpose of the creation  the Consumers Union is all-round assistance in protecting the rights and interests of consumers and the formation of an honest, competitive market for goods and services in Tajikistan. The priorities of the Consumers Union are based on the promotion of fair democratic market relations, strengthening and development of the private business sector and free competition.

In December 2007, the Consumers Union was re-registered with the Ministry of Justice and in connection with the expansion of its activities was re-registered as a republican organization of the Consumers Union of Tajikistan.

Areas of activity of the Consumers Union:

Creation of an effective legislative framework in the field of consumer protection in Tajikistan. Ongoing legal expertise of the legislative framework in the field of protecting the rights and interests of consumers, promoting and lobbying for changes in legislation in this area.

“Hotline”. Legal protection of the population regarding the protection of their rights as consumers by calling the hotline and at the Consulting Center at the Union of Consumers.

“Housing and communal services”. Protection of the rights and interests of consumers in relations with suppliers of housing and communal services in cities and rural areas of Tajikistan, development and promotion of market models of management of housing and communal services.

Electricity Governance Initiative (EGI). Since 2008, the Union of Consumers is a member of the international network EGI – Electricity Good Governance Initiative. The initiative aims to improve the governance of the electricity sector in Tajikistan by promoting the principles of transparency, accountability, citizen participation and decision-making capacity.

Increasing legal literacy of the population. Conducting educational work on the protection of consumer rights among the population through seminars and trainings, through speeches in the media, distribution of booklets, practical manuals on consumer protection.

Strengthening partnerships. Close cooperation with consumer organizations in the CIS and around the world, joint activities and exchange of experience in the field of protecting the rights and interests of consumers.
